This week, Pierce Brosnan said he didn't do anything wrong when it comes to Yellowstone National Park. They're saying he wandered into the hot springs where he shouldn't be. If they decide he's guilty, it's a big fall from being James Bond to just another bad tourist. The story goes, he went off the path, got caught by a US attorney in Wyoming, and now he's facing some trouble. But he's not the only one getting in trouble in US national parks.
In 2022, a Wyoming Law Review article talked about how more and more people were doing things they shouldn't in parks, like what they call "national resource violations." That could be anything from Brosnan's hot springs adventure to serious stuff like breaking things or hunting illegally. Because of all this, they made the Yellowstone Justice Center in 2008. It's the place where they deal with law and punishment for things that happen in the park.
Then in June 2023, the park put out a statement about how some visitors caused the death of two black bears and a bison calf. There's even an Instagram account called Tourons of Yellowstone, where they share almost 1,300 posts of tourists doing dumb things.
Luckily, the National Park Service (NPS) has some guidelines to help people stay out of trouble. Cynthia Hernandez, a spokesperson for the NPS, says tourists should follow the Plan Like a Park Ranger program. It's all about traveling responsibly in parks. She says, "Every visitor is important for taking care of the more than 400 national parks in the country." And for folks like Brosnan, Hernandez warns, "If you break the rules in the park, you might get fined or even go to jail."
